EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

School Program

Mobile labs

The Mobile Lab is a program that can touch on or revisit several K-8 science, social studies and other curricular concepts generally or in more detail by age group. In addition, this program helps develop students' socio-affective, cognitive and communicative skills.

The Mobile Lab travels directly to schools to offer one-hour sessions for groups of 30 students or less. Schools choose two out of five available stations with a theme: lobster, lobster fishing, marine ecosystems, species relationships and the importance of habitat conditions for species. In addition, this year, the theme of climate change will be addressed in several of the stations.

School visits to the Eco-Centre

The centre also hosts schools to educate students about the importance of having a healthy marine ecosystem for the lobster life cycle through educational and interactive tours. Schools have the choice to visit for 60 or 90 minutes, which gives students the opportunity to do several activities in the centre and on the beach near the Eco-Centre. The number of activities varies according to the duration of the visit.

In addition, all participants will receive a baby lobster adoption certificate that will help maintain a stable lobster population for New Brunswick's coastal communities. Each baby lobster will be raised at our hatchery and released during the summer.

The content of the field trips can be used as a primer or back end for several K-8 science curriculum concepts, targeting one element in general or more in detail depending on the age group.

The following are some of the learning outcomes of the science level programs targeted by the interactive activities of the Homarus Eco-Center :

  • Kindergarten to grade 2: concrete observations towards scientific awakening, life cycles, differences between the needs of living and non-living beings.

  • Grades 3 to 5: marine life classification, marine anatomy, life cycles, the food web and relationships between living things.

  • Grades 6-8: marine species classification, species needs, marine species adaptations, food chain, reproductive patterns, behaviours, human impact, and interactions between species and species’ ecosystem.

Our rates are $ 4.50 / student for the 60-minute visit and $ 5.75 / student for the 90-minute visit, taxes included. All accompanying adults have free admission.
